Biography

Born in Spain in 1993, Juan Francisco Otón Martínez started his piano studies at the age of 8, under the direction of Nuria Belando Ros. His musical activity started at the age of 10, when he was invited to play at the “Manuel de Falla” Auditorium in Granada, inside one of the recitals of the 7 th International Masterclass and Piano Festival “Leonel Morales”. Since then, he has won numerous prizes at several National and International Competitions, like the International “Spanish Composers” Piano Competition in Madrid, the International Piano Competition for Young Performers “Ciutat de Lliria”, the International Piano Competition “Villa de Xàbia”, the “María Herrero” International Piano Competition, the National Piano competition “Gabriel Teruel Machi” and so forth.

So far, he has made public appearances and given chamber music and solo recitals all throughout Europe and the United States. Playing solo recitals keeps being one of his preferences, having performed in numerous festivals, countries and halls, including the “Auditori y Palau de Congressos” of Castellón; the “Infanta Doña Elena” Auditorium in Águilas; the “Institut Valencià d´Art Modern” in Valencia; the “Manuel de Falla” Auditorium, the “Santa Fe” Theatre and the “Caja Rural” Hall in Granada; the Indiana University Hall in Bloomington, the Thury Castle in Varpalota, the “Joaquín Rodrigo” Auditorium in las Rozas, the Kulas Hall, the Mixon Hall and the Gartner Auditorium in Cleveland, “El Batel” Auditorium in Cartagena; the Wiener Saal and the Mozarteum University of Salzburg; the “Bazylice Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny” of Koronowo; the “Sacrestia del Vasari, Chiesa di Sant´ Anna dei Lombardi” in Naples; the “Medina Elvira” Theatre, etc. He had also participated in the IV Young Soloists Festival at the Algezares Auditorium in Murcia, where he had the honor to perform the world´s premiere of the work “Mirando al Thader”, from Maestro D., José L. López García.

He also had the chance to perform Rachmaninoff´s 2nd Piano Concerto several times, with the “ESMUC Symphony Orchestra” in Barcelona, under the direction of Xavier Puig Ortiz; with the “Torun Symphony Orchestra” in Poland, under the direction of Przemysław Fiugajski and with the Professional Symphonic Orchestra of Cartagena, under the direction of Andrés Pérez Bernabé. He also performed Thaikovsky´s First Piano Concerto during the Anniversary of Cartagena´s Young Symphonic Orchestra (JOSCT), under the direction of Álvaro Pintado. Furthermore, he has been invited to Milan, where he had recorded some solo performances and Masterclasses under the label of the iClassical-Academy and medici.tv, with Ricardo Castro and other world artists.

He has attended to many piano Masterclasses both, in Spain and abroad, where he has been in contact with great personalities of the music world like, Chiantore, Mariana Gurcova, Vincenzo Balzani, Albert Attenelle, Bodgan Kulakowsky, Ludmil Angelov, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Andreas Frölich, Leonel Morales, Ilja Scheps, Dang Thai Son, Ricardo Castro, Pavel Gililov, Yuri Bogdanov, Paola Bruni, Jonathan Biss, Daniil Trifonov, Serguei Babayan, Orion Weiss y Kirill Gerstein among others. He finished his Bachelor studies of Piano Interpretation with the highest qualifications at the “Salvador Seguí” Superior Music Conservatory in Castellón, under the direction of Maestro Leonel Morales. That same year, he was accepted and rewarded with a Scholarship for coursing his Master degree in performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, in the United States of America.

In addition, he received from their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain the prestigious Scholarship granted by "la Caixa" Foundation to carry out postgraduate studies at universities in North America (United States and Canada) and at universities in the Asia- Pacific zone, being one of the 55 contestants selected in 2016.

Since 2017, he had studied in the United States with Maestro Antonio Pompa-Baldi. Recently, the Cleveland Institute of Music has awarded him the title of "Master of Music" in Piano Performance with honors. In addition, he has received the "Gilbert M. Brooks Dean's Award" for Academic Excellence, in recognition of the student who has taken the most credits and has obtained the highest academic average of his class.
